Positive Discipline at SOL

Intentional Skill-Building for Community Life

Positive Discipline at SOL is proactive and skills-focused. Rather than reacting to behavior, we focus on equipping children with the tools they need to participate confidently and cooperatively within a shared community.

Children are supported in:
· Creating shared agreements and classroom guidelines, fostering ownership, accountability, and mutual respect
· Establishing consistent routines, which provide structure while supporting autonomy
· Engaging in meaningful work, where children experience purpose, contribution, and belonging

A central focus of our approach is self-regulation and emotional awareness. Children learn to:
· Identify and name emotions
· Recognize when they feel overwhelmed
· Practice strategies to calm their bodies and minds and return to balance

We also intentionally teach communication and conflict-resolution skills, including:
· Expressing needs and perspectives respectfully
· Listening with empathy
· Working through conflicts collaboratively
· Building cooperation and shared responsibility

Mistakes are embraced as natural opportunities for learning. Children are guided to reflect on their actions, repair relationships, and move forward with greater understanding, strengthening resilience, confidence, and trust.

Encouragement, Belonging, and Growing Independence

As an encouragement model, Positive Discipline emphasizes effort, growth, and contribution rather than external rewards or harsh punishment. Children learn to encourage themselves and one another, developing intrinsic motivation and confidence. Through daily opportunities to collaborate, consult together, and respect differences, children build the roots of responsibility while developing the wings of independence needed to navigate their world with care and confidence.

Partnering with Parents: Positive Discipline Workshops

At SOL, we believe that parenting, like education, is a journey of continuous learning and growth -one rooted in love, connection, and mutual respect. Our Positive Discipline Workshops, based on the work of Dr. Jane Nelsen and led by certified Positive Discipline Parent Educators, offer parents practical, compassionate tools to strengthen relationships, support healthy communication, and foster cooperation within the family.

These workshops are ideal for parents seeking ongoing guidance in developing positive strategies that help children become responsible and capable members of both the family and the broader community. Through experiential activities, real-life discussions, and reflective exercises, parents explore topics such as responding effectively to temper tantrums, navigating sibling conflict, establishing healthy routines, nurturing independence, and building consultative practices through family meetings. Throughout the series, parents learn how to maintain clear, respectful boundaries while responding with empathy and love, honoring the dignity of both the child and the adult.
